- What's my "On-line Resume"?
This is where you put all the "personal" information. It's 100% confidential to you.
No one else -- other than you -- has access to it (that's why keeping your ID and password
private is so important!). It will be used by you in applying to
post-grad options, like
college. This is where you enter you GPA for each year. Coming soon we will be automatically
posting your test results here.
This is where you can change your password. Remeber to WRITE IT DOWN! You will need your
password every time you enter BetaWeb. If you change it remember to WRITE IT DOWN!
This is also where you create a "handle". That is the name by which you are known on the
BetaWeb. If you handle is "craig" then you will receive e-mail as "craig@betaweb.org" and anyone
in the world can get to your web page at "craig.betaweb.org". You can pick any name you like --
as long as it's not taken (and it's in good taste). If it's already taken you can pick another.
This ia also where you enter your "hobbies and interests". This will help other Beta's find
you using the "Find-A-Beta" capability.
The information you enter is saved whenever you click on the "send" icon at the bottom of the
page. You can return and update your "Resume" as often as you like.
- What's my "On-line Journal"?
This is where you enter important information about each year of school. The awards you've
won, the projects you've participated in, the "special events" of your life. It's all 100%
confidential (like all other parts of this section). No one -- other than you -- has access to it.
(that's why keeping your ID and password private is so important).
Take time to keep this page current. As you look back on it, you will be amazed how many
important events you would have forgotten -- except that you've written them down.
You can write as much as you like (well, there is a limit -- but it should be plenty). Pick
your grade and write away. To save your work, press the "send" icon at the bottom of the page.
You can return and update your "Journal" as often as you like.
- What's my "Personal Web Page"?
Here is where you build your personal Web page that can be accessed by anyone in the world.
And it doesn't require one bit of programming!
The "handle" you assigned yourself in your "Resume" makes us your Web page address. If your
handle is "craig", then anyone can get to your web page by simply typing in "craig.betaweb.org"
from anywhere in the world.
Just complete the "1stPage" form. Remember that only material that fits the "good taste"
requirement of the BetaWeb is allowed. To save your work, press the "send" icon at the bottom
of the page. You can return and update your "Web page" as often as you like.
- How do I add pictures to my Web Page?
First you need to find an image you want to use. Any image that fits the "good taste"
requirement of the BetaWeb is allowed. For example, you can use GIFs, TIFs, JPEGs. We suggest
that they be smaller than 5K -- otherwise your page will load very S-L-O-W-L-Y.
Just find the image you want to use with the "browse" button (or just type it it's location).
It will be automatically uploaded and placed on the top center of your page -- just under the
main title.
You can change the picture as often as you like.
- Why do I have to "Log Out" of BetaWeb?
Keeping "your" information private and confidential is the only way to insure that BetaWeb
can best help match you to careers and post-grad opportunites like college. If you share your
ID and password with someone, so they can take a test for example, they can then enter your
private site whenever they like. So do yourself a favor and keep your password private.
- What happens if someone else is using my password?
If we discover that 2 different people are using 1 password, we will disable the password
and ID until the issue is resolved. You will then need to call the national office at (864)583-4553
during regular business hours.
- What exactly is my "E-Mail Account"?
You have a real live e-mail account on the Internet (it's called a POP3 account). You can
send and receive e-mail from anyone in the world. Your e-mail address is composed of your handle --
for example "craig@betaweb.org".
You can use any e-mail program you want to access your BetaWeb account. We have build one into
the BetaWeb. It's very basic. You can send, forward, delete and respond to your e-mail. If you
want to get fancy and send attachements and the like, simply configure a sophisticated e-mail
program to the server name of "betaweb.org" with your "handle" as the login ID and your Password
as the login password. It's that simple.
Remember that only material that meets the "good taste" requirement of the BetaWeb can be sent
using the BetaWeb system.
- How do I "Set Up" my E-Mail account?
Simply enter your "handle" here. This is how you are known on BetaWeb. If a handle is
already taken, you will be told.
- What is "Find-A-Beta"?
Everyone with a "handle" is automatically entered in the BetaWeb "Who's Who" system. You can
find anyone by simply typing in their handle. You can also search for other Betas by typing in
keywords that describe their hobbies and interests (these come from your "keywords" and "hobbies
and interests" sections you completed in your "on-line Resume").
- What is the BetaWeb's "Acceptable Use Policy"?
The BetaWeb represents the high ideals and reputation of the National Beta Club.
In order to insure
that users of BetaWeb find the content of the site always in "good taste", we have created an
"Acceptable Use Policy" that must be adhered to by all users of the BetaWeb.
If you haven't looked at it, take a look now.
Abuses of the Acceptable Use Policy will result in revocation of BetaWeb privileges.
BetaWeb incorporates a "content filter" that is meant to catch particularly offensive words,
phrases and links. Of course it won't catch everything. We leave it up to you, users of BetaWeb
to keep ALL your content in "good taste".
